Safety Standards

When your child is shaping clay with their hands, you want to know what has been checked. Here is the short version.

ASTM F963-23: the U.S. toy safety standard

What it is:
The main safety standard for children's toys in the United States.
What it means for you:
HEY CLAY is checked for material quality, limits for certain heavy metals, and physical hazards such as small objects, accessible edges, and sharp points.

CPSIA and 16 CFR 1307: lead and phthalates

What it is:
U.S. requirements that limit lead and certain phthalates in children's products. Phthalates are chemicals sometimes used to soften plastics.
What it means for you:
The tested HEY CLAY materials met the applicable U.S. limits for these substances.

ASTM D4236: health and safety of art materials

What it is:
A U.S. standard for evaluating potential long-term health hazards of art materials, including modeling clay.
What it means for you:
A qualified toxicologist reviewed the HEY CLAY formulation. The assessment concluded that it is unlikely to cause chronic health effects when used as intended. No additional chronic health hazard warning was required under LHAMA.

Toxicological risk assessment: an additional safety evaluation

What it is:
An assessment of potential health risks based on the clay's ingredients and how children are expected to use it.
What it means for you:
The formulation was evaluated for skin and eye irritation, sensitization, and toxicity from skin contact or accidental hand-to-mouth exposure. The assessment concluded that it is unlikely to pose a significant health risk to children aged 3 and older under normal and reasonably foreseeable conditions of use, provided the manufacturer's instructions are followed.
